First Meetings of the Boards of the Fudan University’s Xuemin Institute of Advanced Studies and the Xuemin Natural Science Research Fund Held
Recently, the inaugural meeting of the Board of the Fudan University Xuemin Institute of Advanced Studies was convened, alongside the first meeting of the Board of the Xuemin Natural Science Research Fund of Fudan University. Jin Li, President of Fudan University and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; Li Ping and Liao Mei, members of the Fudan University Board of Trustees; Xu Zheng, Executive Vice President of Fudan University and Chair of the Board of the Fudan University Education Development Foundation; and Peng Huisheng, Assistant to the President, Dean of the Institute of Science and Technology, and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, attended the meetings, together with relevant board members and heads of related units. The meetings featured in-depth discussions on topics such as the development plan of the Xuemin Institute and the management and operation of the Fund.
Peng Huisheng chaired the board meeting of the Xuemin Institute. Yang Xiaohong, Executive Dean of the Xuemin Institute, presented the work plan and current progress from the perspectives of strategic positioning, system building, talent identification, and budget planning. The Institute has set as its goal becoming a world's top institution for fundamental and interdisciplinary research, with a focus on major original scientific breakthroughs. It aims to build a superior research ecosystem and strengthen collaboration with schools and departments across the university, and plans to establish mechanisms for the selection and support of outstanding young scientists from around the world.
During the meeting, the Board reviewed on the report. Li Ping proposed that the Institute should conduct comprehensive, on-site benchmarking visits to leading institutions worldwide in order to accumulate rich first-hand experience, and at the same time draw on corporate experience in strategic planning to define clear goals for the Xuemin Institute. He expressed the hope that the Institute's research and office spaces would take inspiration from advanced practices at top R&D institutions at home and abroad, so as to provide young scientists with ample space for communication and discussion.
In his remarks, Jin Li pointed out that, as an important platform for Fudan University to achieve breakthroughs in basic research, Xuemin Institute must remain firmly committed to long-termism, stay true to its original aspiration of innovation, and advance its development with higher standards and broader vision. He emphasized the need to continuously deepen international exchanges and cooperation, not only to actively "go global", but also to effectively "bring in" top scholars from around the world, thus promoting the internationalization of both faculty and students. By attracting the best global talent and building a high-level, internationalized talent pipeline, the Institute will contribute Fudan's strength to scientific and technological progress in China and worldwide.
Xu Zheng chaired the first meeting of the Board of the Xuemin Natural Science Research Fund at Fudan University. In accordance with the Fund's charter, the first Board was established at the meeting. The Board heard reports on the Xuemin Institute's work plan and budget, and deliberated on the relevant proposals.
